about

The premise for this anthology is a little different from a standard "greatest hits" collection; it casts a wider net over my "career" and takes from it the "best" that the preceding collections have archived. There have been other such collections under different names, but this one is unique in that it happens to land as the 100th album - a milestone, surely - and is essentially a survey of nearly HALF of the time I had been recording music. Since I've been doing that since 1985, by the time 2008 rolled around, 1996/1997 would have been the halfway mark; however, my "watershed" 78th album from 1996 was the cut-off for the last wide-reaching anthology, so none of its tracks appear here - nor would they have fit on the CD.

By 2008, I had resolved that I would be stopping and not continue to my 101st album unless there was a significant event or reason to do so, such as having a band or, heaven forfend, a record deal! I imagined such a new album would be called simply "1" but those "in the know" would know to add 100 to that figure.

As it happened, my exile of silence lasted only two years, and I found that I had a few songs to record, which I did. It wasn't a full album, so I considered it a stop-gap measure and numbered it 100.5, imagining that dong so wouldn't transgress my superstition of proceeding to 101. I called it an EP, even though the CD swelled to full LP length with the addition of a few other sundry items and several instrumental mixes of songs from preceding albums.

From then, it was almost another 8 years before I finally broke my silence and released 101, and the story behind that can be found on that album's info page.

For those seeking "new" music not found on my other uploaded albums, tracks 5-8 are not found on any albums that I have uploaded, or have plans to upload.

The album cover for Ω 100 is a montage that includes all of the album covers, perhaps too small to see much detail, in such a way to suggest the omega shape. The back features the same covers chronologically, with my image superimposed.

James Castelli / Omega New Jersey

Omega (Ω) is the symbol chosen back in 1985 to catalogue any musical endeavor in which James Castelli participated that was recorded. The first 50 (low quality) albums were produced in the first five years and most of the next 50+ albums available here were made over the next 28 years. The styles range from pop to experimental to progressive to classical, with James Castelli the main composer. ... more
